MARITIME MAIL IN THE AMERICAS PERU
1877 (23 May) large part of a front from Tacna to New York, internal postage paid with strip of 4x20c brown (Lama), via the British Post, where strip of four of 1sh green (pl.12) was added and cancelled with blue "C36" obliterator of Arica, with departure and "Panama Transit" cds alongside. Upon entry at New York, "U.S. Charge to Collect 45 Cents" was stamped, representing 9 times the 5c rate for US postage, indicated by the "9" in blue crayon. Postage needed to be collected from recipient, since Peru was not yet a member of the UPU. Interestingly enough, both the British and Peruvian franking are at 8 times the single rate, while the US amount is based on the 9 times the single rate, impressive piece
