Lot #139
GERMAN EAST AFRICA BRITISH INVASION AND OCCUPATION
1916 (12 Dec) stampless cover, with letter from a Goan merchant in British-occupied Lindi to his brother-in-law in Portuguese East Africa. Sent via Mombasa, Quelimane and Zanzibar, it arrived at Ibo (10.2), having been passed by British and Portuguese censors (Beira). The letter mentions "here there is no post office and not be had stamps, so I have to post my letters as bearing letters. Mail comes this side every month twice with Man-of-War, by which we get post." The letter does not mention that at that time, Lindi was bombarded daily by a naval detachment of the Schutztruppe, using a 4.1 inch gum salvaged from SMS Konigsberg
