GERMAN EAST AFRICA Mafia Island Issues
1915 4h green, manuscript "G R Mafia JDM" overprint in black, well centered, h.r., fresh and v.f., only 10-15 were issued by the Governor Lt. Colonel J.D. Macklay when the handstamp was not readily available, with 2004 Robert Gibbs cert. The British occupied Mafia, a small island off the delta of the Rufiji River, in January 1915, as a base of operations against the cruiser "Konigsberg", which had holed up in the delta to repair her boilers. Only a small numbers of German East African and Indian Expeditionary Force stamps were handstamped for civilian use (Gibbs 12)
