| Lot #252 GERMAN COLONIES Wuga Provisional Issue 1916 2 1/2h and 7 1/2h types I and II, also 1r gray carmine, unused without gum with usual faint toning, v.f. for these difficult stamps, each with a handstamped guarantee mark (In January 1916, the director of Posts contracted with the Evangelical Mission print shop in Wuga to produce substitutes for the dwindling number of Berlin-printed Yacht stamps. In March, 1916, the most needed values (2 1/2h, 7 1/2h and 1 rupee) were delivered to postal headquarters at Morogoro, but were never used, since the blockade runner "Marie" arrived from Germany with a fresh supply of stamps at about the same time. The Wuga issue was buried in a cement drain on a plantation near Morogoro later in 1916 (to avoid capture by the British). After the war, the stamps were exhumed in very bad condition, with a small fraction still intact auctioned at Berlin in 1922), (*) Catalog #Mi.III-V Catalog Value €1,940 | $475.00 Bidding Closed |
