Lot #323
EGYPT
1926 The Kingdom of Egypt was created in 1922, with King Fuad I installed as its first ruler. A passionate philatelist, he was instrumental in creating various commemorative issues, many featuring portraits of himself. In 1926, to celebrate his 58th birthday, a special high value stamp of the King as a naval commander was released, followed by a set of three International Navigational Congress pictorials. Before the year was out, Fuad announced that 1,500 copies of his birthday stamp (printed in sheets of 25) plus a limited number of the ship stamps (printed in gutter panes of 50), would be overprinted "Port Fouad" in conjunction with the inauguration of a new town being built to relieve congestion in Port Said. As rumors spread quickly that these new overprinted stamps would be a "profitable investment", officials in charge bought up most of the available stocks for themselves. In the post offices there was intense disappointment and riots broke out. The New York Times reported that five people died in their quest for the stamps. While The "Port Fouad" overprints are now catalogued at between ten and a hundred times the price of the original issues, the catalogue value fails to recount the human cost ("Stamp Magazine", "Egypt: Stamps to die for?", by John Winchester, Mar 14, 2012). We are pleased to present the "Inauguration of Port Fouad", Ship of the Hatshepsut 5m, 10m and 15m values, bottom sheet margin panes of 25, n.h., also 50p violet & red violet, vertical "Port Fouad" overprint, complete sheet of 25, positions 16-20 (second row from the bottom) are perforated 14x14x15 instead of 14x15, minor perf. Separations, some slight hinge reinforcements in margin only, stamps n.h., well centered, fresh, mostly v.f., signed Diena, with his 1962 certificate. A magnificent gem of Egyptian philately, ex-King Carol of Romania
