SWITZERLAND - CANTONAL ADMINISTRATION Zurich
1843 4 Rp black, vertical red lines, type III, unused without gum, with strong color and impression, clear vertical red lines, three full margins, close margin at right that just touches the frame line at bottom, overall a fine example of a stamp that is seldom offered in unused condition; handstamped W.H.C. (Colson), with 1995 von der Weid certificate (Zumstein 1S, SFr 25,000) (In 1843 the Canton of Zurich decided to issue stamps to prepay postage. These were issued in two denominations: the 4 Rappen for local letters, and a 6 Rappen value for use to other cantons. With these issues, Zurich became a pioneer in continental Europe and the second government to issue postage stamp. If you take a look at the design of this issue, you may clearly see that the artist used a famous Penny Black of Great Britain as a model. There is a fundamental similarity in the side and top panels, the corner square and in the background, while the large figure of value takes the place of the Queen's head)

An unusual feature of this item is the ornamental design placed between stamps. This issue was in use for a very short time, as the Federal local appeared generally throughout Switzerland on April 5,1850)

1849 4c black and red Poste Locale, the so-called Vaud (Waadt), a magnificent used example of this very rare stamp, featuring four extra-large margins, with dividing lines on three sides, crisp impressions, neat strike of a red rosette cancel on piece with corresponding Geneva 3 May 50 struck alongside, v.f., signed Diena, Ernst Stook, also von der Weid, with his 2004 certificate ("en parfait etat de conservation et de fraicheur"). The Four Cent Geneva cantonal is one of the key rarities of early Switzerland, with superb examples such as this being incredibly challenging to locate (Zu.9, SFr 25,000) (this 4 centimes "Poste Locale" adhesive was intended for letters within a city, while the 6 centimes "Cantonal Taxe" was used for letters abandoned and delivered in the Canton of Zurich. The reason why the stamp is called the Vaud 4 is attributed to the fact that it was used in Geneva and the district of Nyon in Canton Vaud. The stamp was issued in sheets of 100 but the total number of items that was printed is also unknown. It was made obsolete in a year due to the December 1849 currency law, thus making Vaud 4 really scarce)

During this period in Swiss history each canton issued their own stamps and the Basel Dove is the first to combine engraving and embossing. Created by the architect Melchior Berry, Basel Dove features blue, crimson, and black colors. Interestingly, it was not appreciated by the local populace and quickly withdrawn. She holds a spear in her right arm, and her left arm is resting on a shield, emblazoned with the arms of the Helvetic Confederation. The effect given by the shape of the wreath around her embossed head caused many German speaking collectors to jokingly refer to the design as "Strubel", referring to the visual effect of Helvetia having "unkempt" or "frizzy" hair. The nickname for these issues stuck, and just about every collector of Swiss stamps now refers to them as "The Strubels")
