                                | Lot #4014 United States Intervention in Haiti 1919-34 Exhibit collection, two-frames (32 pages), with 54 covers and cards, showing various markings used by the U.S. Marine Corps in Haiti, with Earliest and Latest Recorded cancels, "U.S.S. Kittery" cover to USA, "Aeroplane Mail", Registered covers, including the only recorded example of "New York (U.S.M.C. Br. Port-au-Prince) NY", Registry boxes, "Return Receipt Requested", plus many others. (The U.S. Marines landed at Port-au-Prince in 1915, after the National City Bank of NY convinced President Wilson to take control of Haiti's political and financial interests. This invasion and ensuing occupation resulted in years of socioeconomic instability, during which Haiti had three new presidents. The U.S. rule was a military regime, with martial law imposed by the Marines and the Haitian Gendarmerie. Most Haitians lived in poverty, while American personnel were well-compensated. In 1934, the United States, in concert with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's "Good Neighbor Policy", officially withdrew from Haiti while retaining economic connections.
