| Lot #4558 SERBIA French Forces in Serbia 1917 (27 July) cover headed "Cercle des Intimes - Salonique", sent from Monastir (Bitolj) to the Commandant of the French Escadrille 525, with the Serbian Army on the Salonica front bearing previously unrecorded (!) cachet "Commission Secours De Monastir Necessiteaux Israelites" (Commission to aid Jewish needy of Monastir), cover somewhat ragged, backflap missing, but surely unique and historical item (at the turn of 20th century, Monastir's Jewish population reached nearly 11,000. During World War I, Monastir suffered two years of bombardment and invasions. More than 5,000 Monastir Jews fled their homes and lived as refugees in the surrounding area. When the war was over, Monastir's Jews numbered just over 3,000)
