MEXICO FRENCH SHIPS - 1877-78 Porte de Mar
1877 (21 Apr) cover (opened for display) sent from Tabasco, franked with 25c Hidalgo, tied by oval "San Juan Bautista" departure pmk, used in combination with France 1fr Type Sage, tied by octagonal "Mexique" datestamp, endorsed "Paquete Frances" and addressed to Victoria, Spain, marked "1P.30" in blue, on reverse 3x10c and diagonal half of 2c Porte De Mar adhesives added, mostly uncanceled as always, except one tied by "Vera-Cruz Paq. Fr. B.No.2" (22 Apr 77), with Santander 22 May 77 arrival, fine and truly exceptional Porte de Mar combination cover with Mexico and Type Sage 1fr, one of only two covers recorded paying this rate, signed Calves and Roumet. (With the end of the Consular Agencies in Mexico, the post office had to deal directly with shipping lines. Each company negotiated different rates for the various routes they served. The Porte de Mar adhesives were used because the public wanted proof of payment of these fees. Since the French Porte de Mar fees were much higher than the British, their service was seldom used)
