The Alfred F. Kugel Collection, Part Two

Welcome to Part II of the Al Kugel Collection, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. We begin with United States Interventions, first in China, during the Boxer Uprising, then in Northern Mexico (looking for Pancho Villa). Spanish American War follows, with U.S. Army in the Caribbean, U.S. involvement in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, registered mail from the A.E.F. and the U.S. Army and its Postal Service Abroad during WWII, including "Prexies at War" exhibit. There are solid selections of U.S. Possessions and Allied Intervention in Russia (quite an astounding showing, with many unique items). There are selections from the specialized collections of Albania, Bulgaria, Crete and others. An avid Military historian, Mr. Kugel assembled a splendid collection of the aftermath of the Great War, with French and British Occupation forces in Europe and the Middle East, following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian, German, Russian and Ottoman Empires. There are excellent selections from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Russia, as well as many uncommon usages from The Holyland, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. World War I and WWII German and Italian Occupation issues, including satellite Croatia and Slovakia are very well represented in this sale. The sale will take place live via CherrystoneLIVE.

 | Lot #4011 United States Intervention in Dominican Republic 1916-24 single Frame (16 pages) Exhibit of 31 covers or cards, starting with the earliest recorded example of U.S. military mail from the Dominican Republic, written on board the "U.S.S. Neptune", while anchored off Santo Domingo and then posted nine days later from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There are forerunners, "Military Government of Santo Domingo" ("Passed by Censor U.S.N." handstamp), covers sent by military pouch to Puerto Rico or the U.S., earliest recorded "San Domingo Dominican Republic U.S. Marines" cancel (17 Nov 1917), YMCA covers, "U.S.M.C. Br.Santo Domingo" cancels, Naval dispatches "U.S.S.Nokomis", Registration marks, various Earliest and Latest Recorded examples, registered cover from U.S.M.C. Santiago (extremely rare), "La Vega, D.R." and "U.S. Marine Barracks, La Vega" (only five examples recorded), "U.S.M.C. Br.Puerto Plata", two covers, one registered and censored (discovery copy and still the only example recorded), "San Pedro de Macoris", etc. A splendid presentation (the first U.S. occupation was aimed to force the Dominicans to repay their large debts to European creditors, whose governments threatened military intervention. The U.S. Marines landed on 16 May, 1916 and established effective control of the country within two months. Three major roads were built, largely for military purposes, connecting for the first time the capital with Santiago in the Cibao, Azua in the west, and San Pedro de Macoris in the east.
