The Alfred F. Kugel Collection, Part Two

Welcome to Part II of the Al Kugel Collection, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. We begin with United States Interventions, first in China, during the Boxer Uprising, then in Northern Mexico (looking for Pancho Villa). Spanish American War follows, with U.S. Army in the Caribbean, U.S. involvement in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, registered mail from the A.E.F. and the U.S. Army and its Postal Service Abroad during WWII, including "Prexies at War" exhibit. There are solid selections of U.S. Possessions and Allied Intervention in Russia (quite an astounding showing, with many unique items). There are selections from the specialized collections of Albania, Bulgaria, Crete and others. An avid Military historian, Mr. Kugel assembled a splendid collection of the aftermath of the Great War, with French and British Occupation forces in Europe and the Middle East, following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian, German, Russian and Ottoman Empires. There are excellent selections from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Russia, as well as many uncommon usages from The Holyland, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. World War I and WWII German and Italian Occupation issues, including satellite Croatia and Slovakia are very well represented in this sale. The sale will take place live via CherrystoneLIVE.

Jumauan, franked with specially prepared local label inscribed "USAFFE 2 centavos SCF" (denoting U.S.Armed Far East), tied by Badian/Cebu (16 Mar,194?) pmk, sent to Moalboal, censored by hand at Badian by MP Officer, some toning and cover wrinkles, rare (a small quantity of these labels was printed locally to serve as postage stamps in the areas held by the Philippine Guerilla fighters)

 | Lot #4045 UNITED STATES POSSESSIONS Philippines Military Mail 1944 (30 July) legal size cover franked with 2c "Guerilla Postal Service", tied by oval "Posted in the Free Philippines 30 July 1944 M.D.No.10 Mindanao Guerilla Area", addressed to The Saturday Evening Post in Philadelphia, boxed "We Defend upon Gen.MacArthur's Pledge to Return" handstamp, "Tenth Military District" censor cachet, showing return address of Raul Celeste C/o Major Leo Hipe USFIP APO 500, wrinkled, with some toning, nevertheless a fine cover (released in 1943, this Philippine guerilla stamp was intended for use on the island of Mindanao. It is referred to as the "Free Philippines Guerilla Stamp" and was approved by General Douglas MacArthur. The stamps were printed in Brisbane and were delivered by the U.S.S Naval submarine to the 10th Military District at Esperanza, Agusan province, Mindanao. Colonel Wendell Fertig received the stamps on 15th November 1943, at the time he was the commander of the largest group of guerillas in the Philippines. A few covers were prepared, canceled at HQ at Esperanza and delivered by courier internally or forwarded to Australia)
