The Alfred F. Kugel Collection, Part Two

Welcome to Part II of the Al Kugel Collection, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. We begin with United States Interventions, first in China, during the Boxer Uprising, then in Northern Mexico (looking for Pancho Villa). Spanish American War follows, with U.S. Army in the Caribbean, U.S. involvement in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, registered mail from the A.E.F. and the U.S. Army and its Postal Service Abroad during WWII, including "Prexies at War" exhibit. There are solid selections of U.S. Possessions and Allied Intervention in Russia (quite an astounding showing, with many unique items). There are selections from the specialized collections of Albania, Bulgaria, Crete and others. An avid Military historian, Mr. Kugel assembled a splendid collection of the aftermath of the Great War, with French and British Occupation forces in Europe and the Middle East, following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian, German, Russian and Ottoman Empires. There are excellent selections from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Russia, as well as many uncommon usages from The Holyland, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. World War I and WWII German and Italian Occupation issues, including satellite Croatia and Slovakia are very well represented in this sale. The sale will take place live via CherrystoneLIVE.

1919 Suwalki, two covers and card with provisional Suwalki markings, including "Poczta Polska St.Suwalki", two with "40gr" indicating Postage Paid, Registration and Censor handstamps, fine and uncommon selection (at the end of July 1919, the Paris Peace Conference granted the town of Suwalki to Poland. As the newly-established border was disapproved of by the Polish government, it organized the Sejny Uprising on August 23, 1919. The Polish-Lithuanian War erupted for control of Suwalki and other towns in the area. The war ended in September, but during the Polish-Bolshevik War, the town was captured by the Communists and, after the Battle of Warsaw, it was again passed to the Lithuanians. It was eventually retaken by the Polish Army)

1919 (23 Jan) registered cover from Oderberg to Upper Silesia, franked with Krakow 25/80h pair, tied by bilingual "Oderbwerg Bohumin" pmks, provisional Registry handstamp at top, fine and uncommon usage of the Krakow provisional overprints in Eastern Silesia (After the division of Cieszyn/ Silesia in 1920, Bohumin became part of Czechoslovakia. Following the Munich Agreement, it was annexed by Poland in 1938 and by Nazi Germany at the beginning of World War II)

1914-18 World War I - Vistulla River Flotilla, single frame (16 pages) exhibit with 20 covers or cards, showing Postal History of the Naval Flotilla along the Vistula River, created on 30 July, 1914, when Austria declared war on Serbia, with a variety of markings, destinations, postal rates, Headquarters FPO 186, "S.M.S. Dunajex" and "S.M.S. Goplana", plus many others, fine and rare group, difficult to assemble. In fact it has taken Mr. Kugel more than two decades to put it together.
