The Alfred F. Kugel Collection, Part Two

Welcome to Part II of the Al Kugel Collection, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. We begin with United States Interventions, first in China, during the Boxer Uprising, then in Northern Mexico (looking for Pancho Villa). Spanish American War follows, with U.S. Army in the Caribbean, U.S. involvement in Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, registered mail from the A.E.F. and the U.S. Army and its Postal Service Abroad during WWII, including "Prexies at War" exhibit. There are solid selections of U.S. Possessions and Allied Intervention in Russia (quite an astounding showing, with many unique items). There are selections from the specialized collections of Albania, Bulgaria, Crete and others. An avid Military historian, Mr. Kugel assembled a splendid collection of the aftermath of the Great War, with French and British Occupation forces in Europe and the Middle East, following the fall of the Austro-Hungarian, German, Russian and Ottoman Empires. There are excellent selections from Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Russia, as well as many uncommon usages from The Holyland, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. World War I and WWII German and Italian Occupation issues, including satellite Croatia and Slovakia are very well represented in this sale. The sale will take place live via CherrystoneLIVE.

 | Lot #4437 ITALIAN WORLD WAR II OCCUPATION ISSUES Italian Field Post in the Soviet Union 1941-43 four exhibit pages, with eight cards or covers used by the Italian soldiers in Russia, canceled "Postal Militaire", also "Corpo Italiano di Spedizione in Russia", other markings indicate origins, including Krivoi Rog, Lugansk, Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, etc., handstamps "Zona di Operazione P.M.152", "Comando Aeronautica", plus others, fine and scarce showing of Italian Military on the Eastern Front (by spring of 1943, almost 60 percent of Mussolini's expeditionary force was gone. During 20 months of combat on the Eastern Front, the Italian Army lost 3,010 officers and 81,820 men killed or captured, also 1,290 officers and 28,400 men wounded of frostbitten. During March 1943, all Italian units serving on the Eastern Front were transferred back to Italy. The heavy losses of the 3rd Alpini Division are indicative of those suffered by Italian units in combat against the Red Army. The division set out for Russia with 16,000 men and 4,000 mules and returned to Italy with 3,200 men and 40 mules.  | Lot #4438 ITALIAN WORLD WAR II OCCUPATION ISSUES Italian Field Post in the Soviet Union 1942 (8 Feb) military card to Mantova, prepared by members of the Italian 80th Infantry Regiment, when the supplies of the regular fieldpost cards ran short. Created in Dnepropetrovsk, these cards mimicked the Cyrillic type and were inscribed "Postal Card for the Armed Forces" and "Vincere" and "Vinceremo" (we will win) at top,"Printed by the soldiers of the 80th in Russian type on the banks of the Dnieper September 1941-XIX" at bottom, violet 6 March 1942 censor handstamps, extremely rare example of the provisional card sent by an Italian soldier from Russia | Unsold |
