We are pleased to present our June 18-19, 2024 auction, featuring Part One of the Alfred F. Kugel collection of Postal History of the world, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. The first of many to follow, this sale is only a sample of the vast amount of material yet to be presented. We begin with United States Dollar values on cover, U.S. States Postal Agencies in the Far East, U.S. International Registration Exchange Labels, U.S. Intervention in Mexico and Registered Mail from U.S. Possessions. There is a splendid selection of the International Intervention in China during the Boxer Rebellion, extensive showing of German Colonies in China and the Pacific, with dozens of rare and unusual items, including unique Tientsin handstamps on 2m and 3m Reichspost. In addition, there are selections of World War I British Occupation of Baghdad, Jordan, Salonika, Mafia Island, Saudi Arabia, plus elusive covers from the Austrian, British, Ottoman, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese Empires.

1916 (1 Sep) cover from Mekke to Jeddah, charged "1 Piastre", with departure pmk and marked "Fee Paid" (in Arabic), fine and very rare provisional mark, with bilingual "Djeddah" 2.9.16 arrival pmk on back. (Early in the war, the British developed a plan to foment an uprising among the Arab subjects of the Ottoman Empire. Sharif Hussein of Mecca agreed to back the British, in return for independence. The famous Col. T.E. Lawrence was sent to train and lead Arab forces, which captured Mecca, Jeddah and Aqaba. Hussein declared independence of Hejaz on June 27, 1916, with himself as King)

1918 cover franked with single 1/2pi red paying domestic letter rate, canceled by bilingual "YAMBO" pmk, backflap missing, otherwise v.f. (today "Yanbu" served as a supply and operational base for Arab and British forces fighting the Ottoman Empire during World War I. On July 27, 1916 the Ottoman garrison surrendered to the Arab revolutionary forces. Yanbu remained a small port town until 1975, when the Saudi government designated it as one of the country's two new industrial centers)
