We are pleased to present our June 18-19, 2024 auction, featuring Part One of the Alfred F. Kugel collection of Postal History of the world, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. The first of many to follow, this sale is only a sample of the vast amount of material yet to be presented. We begin with United States Dollar values on cover, U.S. States Postal Agencies in the Far East, U.S. International Registration Exchange Labels, U.S. Intervention in Mexico and Registered Mail from U.S. Possessions. There is a splendid selection of the International Intervention in China during the Boxer Rebellion, extensive showing of German Colonies in China and the Pacific, with dozens of rare and unusual items, including unique Tientsin handstamps on 2m and 3m Reichspost. In addition, there are selections of World War I British Occupation of Baghdad, Jordan, Salonika, Mafia Island, Saudi Arabia, plus elusive covers from the Austrian, British, Ottoman, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese Empires.

 | Lot #3537 SAMOA Forerunners 1889 cover franked with 20pf Reichspost, tied by "Apia Kaiserl. Postagentur" 1889 pmk, with a handstamp of "U.S.S. Iroquois" alongside, endorsed "Apia, Samoa", addressed to Honolulu, Hawaii, care of the U.S. Consul General, with Honolulu, H.I. Sep 25, 1891 arrival pmk and endorsement docketing on reverse, fine (The "Iroquois" had a long and distinguished service in the U.S. Navy, protecting American interests and commerce. She was sent to Samoa in 1889 to reinforce American forces in the aftermath of the 1889 Apia cyclone. Her engines broke down after leaving Honolulu and she spent the next 82 days being blown around the Pacific before washing up in Port Townsend, Washington. After repairs at Mare Island, she again set out for Samoa)

 | Lot #3538 SAMOA Forerunners 1889 20pf ultramarine, canceled on piece by "Imperial German Post Office Apia 5.2.1889", another piece with pair of 10pf carmine tied by framed "Bezahlt Kaiserl. Deutsche Postagentur Apia 1-2-1889" (First Day of usage), plus a registered cover franked with a single and vertical pair of 20pf Reichspost, tied by bold "Bezahlt Kaiserl. Deutsche Postagentur Apia 4-4-1895", with Apia Registry label, sent to Breslau, with arrival (25.5.95) cds on back, little toning, filing fold away from the stamps, two earlier items with 1994 Steuer and 1976 GPS certificates. (The German Consulate in Apia, which also housed the Postal Agency, burned down destroying all the postal equipment. A local print shop produced cancels in both German and English for use to the homeland and on international mail)

Postagentur 2/1/95" pmk, red "10 Cts Paid" in manuscript, endorsed "Per S.S.Alameda via Frisco", with U.S. 5c adhesive added (and covering the cash mark) on arrival and tied by oval registry pmk, San Francisco Jan.8, 1895 Paid All transit and another, possibly arrival pmk on back, fine and extremely rare (after the German Post Office in Apia burned down, destroying the postal equipment and stocks of stamps, the postal agent used a manuscript "Paid" in red on letters to non-German destinations. On arrival, local stamps were purchased and applied to letters forwarded to addressees) (Mi. €5,000+)

 | Lot #3542 SAMOA Forerunners 1901 (5 Dec) stampless cover endorsed "50 Centimes", with "Apia Samoa" departure pmk alongside, addressed to Christchurch, New Zealand, handstamped "T" on arrival, with "Kaiserl. Deutsche Postampt Apia" label on back, Auckland (17 Dec) and Christchurch (20 Dec) arrival pmks on back, minor faults, rare (occasional spot shortages of stamps developed when supplies ran low and an unanticipated ship arrived with a substantial number of potential writers of letters and cards. This cover, sent from Apia was forwarded to New Zealand along with the money to pay the postage due charge)
