We are pleased to present our June 18-19, 2024 auction, featuring Part One of the Alfred F. Kugel collection of Postal History of the world, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. The first of many to follow, this sale is only a sample of the vast amount of material yet to be presented. We begin with United States Dollar values on cover, U.S. States Postal Agencies in the Far East, U.S. International Registration Exchange Labels, U.S. Intervention in Mexico and Registered Mail from U.S. Possessions. There is a splendid selection of the International Intervention in China during the Boxer Rebellion, extensive showing of German Colonies in China and the Pacific, with dozens of rare and unusual items, including unique Tientsin handstamps on 2m and 3m Reichspost. In addition, there are selections of World War I British Occupation of Baghdad, Jordan, Salonika, Mafia Island, Saudi Arabia, plus elusive covers from the Austrian, British, Ottoman, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese Empires.

1909 (25 Mar) cover (backflap missing) franked with single 10pf carmine, canceled by manuscript "S.S. Siar 25/3/09", addressed to a resident of small island of Selen, located near Eitape, signed and accompanied by 1969 Bothe certificate. (Trading vessels traveling between the atolls of Marshall Islands were required to deliver mail to the scattered atolls. Covers received manuscript cancelations with the date of receipt and the name of the ship or name of the atoll. While no regulations were applied in New Guinea, the captain of the steamer "Siar" provided "Atoll Mail" service, canceling stamps by hand and delivering letters to addressees along his route)

Also a single 50pf with a similar departure pmk, fine and extremely rare examples of cancels from this remote post office opened to serve the Hermit Islands to the west of the Admiralty group (opened on 1 October 1910 until the arrival of Australian troops in November 1914)

1914 (8 Sep) cover to Germany, franked with 10pf carmine, tied by "Herbertshohe Deutsch Neu-Guinea" departure pmk, opened by censor and resealed with two blue seals, with four-line "Opened by the Government under the right of war / Rabaul, Sep 1914 / Inspecting officer" handstamp (date filled in by hand), very rare. New Guinea was declared to be on War Status on 6th August, 1914, after which date censorship was imposed on the outgoing (very limited) mail

1914 (22 Aug) postal card with "Herbertshohe Deutsch-Neu-Guinea" departure pmk, overprinted "nur fur die Wehrabteilung und fur die Expeditionstruppe", showing official violet seal "Kaiserlich Deutsche Post Rabaul Deutsch Neuguinea" at left, handstamped "Absender Dienstgrad" and pencil addressed to Rabaul, with 1989 Lantelme certificate. Also included is a top portion only of a similar card, endorsed as Field post card, with Rabaul (9.9) departure pmk and official violet seal (at the start of WWI, German troops in New Guinea were ordered to defend Radio Station and other facilities. A number of cards were prepared for use by the troops in the field, without payment of postage. These cards were overprinted "Field Post only for the defense Corps and the Expeditionary Troops". This handstamp was lost during a raid by Australian forces on Rabaul on 12 August and later supplies were validated in manuscript, until the German surrender on 17th September, 1914)

1914 1m, 2m and 3m Yacht, each canceled on piece by two "Deutsch-Neuguinea" handstamps, with "Maron 5.8.14" cds below, v.f., unrecorded and probably unofficial marking, possibly an essay (in 1914 the "Kaiser's Yacht" stamps were reissued with "Deutsch Neuguinea" (instead of "Deutsch-Neu-Guinea") inscriptions. The new issue was never delivered to the colony, which was occupied by the Allies in September 1914)

1914 (20 July) cover from Freiberg, Germany, franked with 10pf Deutsches Reich, tied by departure cds and addressed to Herbertshohe "Deutch-Neu-Guinea", with "Wegen Kriegzustandes/Zuruck" handstamp. Letters from Germany to their Colonies were being mailed right up to the outbreak of the war (28 July, 1914). Due to the British blockade and capture of German ships on the high seas, there was no possibility for delivery and mail already in the postal system was marked "Return due to the state of war" and sent back to senders
