We are pleased to present our June 18-19, 2024 auction, featuring Part One of the Alfred F. Kugel collection of Postal History of the world, being sold on behalf of the American Philatelic Society. The first of many to follow, this sale is only a sample of the vast amount of material yet to be presented. We begin with United States Dollar values on cover, U.S. States Postal Agencies in the Far East, U.S. International Registration Exchange Labels, U.S. Intervention in Mexico and Registered Mail from U.S. Possessions. There is a splendid selection of the International Intervention in China during the Boxer Rebellion, extensive showing of German Colonies in China and the Pacific, with dozens of rare and unusual items, including unique Tientsin handstamps on 2m and 3m Reichspost. In addition, there are selections of World War I British Occupation of Baghdad, Jordan, Salonika, Mafia Island, Saudi Arabia, plus elusive covers from the Austrian, British, Ottoman, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese Empires.

 | Lot #3474 CAROLINE ISLANDS 1891 (23 June) letter datelined "Kusaie, C.I.", written in English, with envelope franked with 20pf Eagle, posted from "Jaluit Marschall-Inseln" (20.7.91) sent by missionary Pease to his niece in USA, with German Post Office in Apia (Samoa) transits, San Francisco (Oct 2) and Newton Center, Mass. arrival pmks on back, fine and rare example of a Missionary letter from Kusaie (today Kosrae, an island in the Federated States of Micronesia). No German forerunners exist from the Caroline Islands, which was a Spanish possession until 1899. This letter was carried by a ship captain to the German post office in Jaluit and sent four weeks later

 | Lot #3476 CAROLINE ISLANDS 1901 20pf ultramarine, left half canceled by Ponape 12/7/10 pmk on small piece, with official postal agent's seal alongside, v.f., signed Buhler. (Due to the unexpected arrival of the East Asia cruiser squadron, supplies of the most needed denominations of 5pf and 10pf stamps for mailing postcards and letters back home ran out. To meet demand, 500 copies of 3pf stamps were surcharged "5PF" and 20pf stamps were bisected and used for 10pf.
