Lot #880
BRITISH COMMONWEALTH MALTA
1856 (1 June) FL written by Samuel Smiley at "Malta June 1st 1856 Ship Lady Russel" to his brother at Island Magee, Co. Antrim in Ireland, endorsed "Via Marseilles", franked by GB 1sh Embossed (cut to shape), canceled by a bluish "OXO" applied at Constantinople, with unclear blue "Post Office British Army" cds, London and Dublin transits, with Carrickfergus and Ballicarry arrival markings. The sender, Captain of the ship "Lady Russell" wrote that he was "ordered to be ready for sea tomorrow morning, I don't know whether we will go back to Balaklava or not. We are to be towed by the "Golden Fleece." The Crimean War was over by 30th March, 1856 and British troops evacuated by 12th July. Captain Samuel Smiley might have participated in the evacuation. The "OXO" cancel was used from 24 March 1855 to September 1856. An interesting Malta-Crimea-Ireland connection, with Robson-Lowe certificate, ex-Charles Hahn (cover was illustrated in "The Philatelist" July-August 1989)
