Lot #738
GUATEMALA
1881 Provisional Issue, surcharged 5 Centavos on 1/2r green (Indian Woman), tied by blue grids on cover headed "J Rufino Barios" (President of Guatemala) and sent on 14 Sep 1881 from Guatemala City to Paris, red and magenta departure datestamps, fully intact Seal of the President on back, minor cover mending at top, fine, ex-Lange, with 1979 Royal certificate. The Centavos surcharged Provisionals on the entry of Guatemala into the UPU are surprisingly rare used on cover. Goodman lists a total of only four covers of all values, three of which are the 5c on 1/2r yellow green. All three of these covers are to England which is unusual as this is an underpayment of the ten centavos rate. The cover offered here is not listed by Goodman. The provisional 5c single foreign rate was only valid for 68 days (Aug.1-Oct.7,1881)
