Cherrystone Auctions March 12-13, 2024 Sale of Rare Stamps and Postal History of the World will take place at our Teaneck, N.J. Galleries and over the internet via CherrystoneLIVE. The sale contains 1,316 lots and will be offered in four sessions, beginning with United States, with a specialized collection of Postal History of the South, ex-Dabney. Worldwide sections include an exceptional collection of Bavaria, with stamps and covers, offered for the first time at auction. There are solid sections of France, Italy, British Commonwealth, all with many individual rarities. Also featured is a collection of Sweden, with exceptional First Issues. There are 200 Large Lots and Collections, ranging from single country albums, specialized holdings and featuring a comprehensive collection of Indian Feudatory States (estimated to realize $100,000), multi-carton worldwide groups and large cover lots offered intact. WORLD COINS Great Britain
1640 hammered silver Shilling of King Charles the First, with the star mint mark to both sides indicating that this coin was struck in the year 1640 or 1641 in London before Parliament seized control of the Tower mint. The obverse features the sixth "Briot's'" bust facing left. The Roman numerals "XII" behind Charles I's head indicate the coin's value: twelve pence or one Shilling. The reverse shows an ornate, garnished oval shield of Royal Arms (Charles was facing bankruptcy in 1640 and seized silver bullion from the Tower mint worth £130,000), somewhat worn as always

1817 Half Sovereign coin, with Laureate portrait of King George III lettered "GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA 1817" (George the Third by the Grace of God), engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci, showing Crowned shield of arms on reverse. Also included is 1885 Victoria Half Sovereign, both about uncirculated, v.f.

1820 George III, beautiful gold Sovereign, struck in 1820, showing laureate head of King George III with tighter curls, facing right and St George wearing cape and helmet, mounted on a rearing horse on reverse. England's patron saint holds one half of a broken spear, the other half lies on the ground near a dragon which cowers under the horses hooves. George III died on 20 January1820 but his name and portrait continued to be used on Sovereigns. These gold coins had been introduced in late 1817, taking their name from an older, hammered Tudor coin. Both sides of the first milled Sovereigns were designed by the Italian artist Benedetto Pistrucci. This example is struck in 7.98 grams of 22 carat gold with a 22.05mm diameter and a milled edge. 1864 Queen Victoria, gold Sovereign, head of Young Queen Victoria facing left wearing ribbon (double fillet) in her hair, which is collected up into a knot behind. The reverse shows the Ensigns Armorial of the United Kingdom within a plain shield quartered with the arms of England, Scotland and Ireland, with a branch of laurel on each side of the shield, tied at the bottom by a ribbon.
