Cherrystone Auctions March 12-13, 2024 Sale of Rare Stamps and Postal History of the World will take place at our Teaneck, N.J. Galleries and over the internet via CherrystoneLIVE. The sale contains 1,316 lots and will be offered in four sessions, beginning with United States, with a specialized collection of Postal History of the South, ex-Dabney. Worldwide sections include an exceptional collection of Bavaria, with stamps and covers, offered for the first time at auction. There are solid sections of France, Italy, British Commonwealth, all with many individual rarities. Also featured is a collection of Sweden, with exceptional First Issues. There are 200 Large Lots and Collections, ranging from single country albums, specialized holdings and featuring a comprehensive collection of Indian Feudatory States (estimated to realize $100,000), multi-carton worldwide groups and large cover lots offered intact. 1923 surcharged in red on first Peking printing 2 Cts on 3c blue-green, surcharge inverted error, deep bright color, well centered, very fine and fresh with original customary flat and dried gum, apparently n.h., with 2009 Pascal Scheller certificate. It is believed that there are less than 20 examples known of this error (According to contemporary reports (Theodore Sidall), only 13 of these stamps exist and were acquired at Wanhsien, a small port about half way between Chungking and Ichang, in July, 1924, by a Dr. A. Germain, the medical officer on the French gunboat "Balny." He applied 2 of the stamps to separate covers which he mailed to himself locally and sold 10 unused examples to Theodore Champion, French stamp dealer, who then sold a block of four and a single to M.D. Chow, two singles to Bush and one each to Hinds and Hawkins). One of the "Four Treasures of the Republic" (Chan 280a)(China Stamp Society Catalogue327b,$250,000) (catalogued as hinged)
