Welcome to our January 9-10 Sale of U.S. and Worldwide Stamps and Postal History. The sale contains 1,508 lots and will be offered in four sessions, beginning with United States and U.S. Possessions. Worldwide sections include France, Germany, Italian Area, with many individual rarities. British Commonwealth, with a further selection of G.R.I. errors and varieties. There are solid selections from rest of the world, with additional items from the Carl A. Kilgas and Martin Stempien estates, plus nearly 200 Large Lots and Collections, ranging from single country albums, specialized holdings and featuring a comprehensive collection of British Commonwealth (estimated to realize $100,000), multi-carton worldwide groups and large cover lots offered intact.

1850 cover franked with 3kr and 6kr Arms, tied by "Wien 1 July" datestamps and sent to Verona, where it was additionally franked with 30 Centesimi brown and sent to Venice, both Verona and Venezia pmks on back, stamps with margins all around or just touching (6kr), fine and interesting "forwarded" mixed franking combination Austria/Lombardy-Venetia cover, with 1974 Albert Matl, 1996 Sorani and 2002 Colla certificates

AUSTRIA
1865 large cover (opened for display) from Wiener Neustadt, Austria, 13 May to Mexico, franked with 3kr green (2), 10kr blue (2) and 15kr brown (7) for a total of 131kr, addressed to a lieutenant in the Hussar regiment of Austrian Volunteers at Puebla, Mexico. The letter was intended to be sent via Paris and St. Nazaire, but the French ship had departed (red boxed "apres le depart" hs), so it was sent instead by British ship "Seine" departing Southampton May 17th and arriving at St. Thomas May 31st, then by "Conway" departing June 17th, with a stop at Puerto Rico, arriving at Veracruz June 27th. The 1/2r concessionary rate (applied by a black handstamp) was charged - the only recorded instance of this on inbound mail. A remarkable cover, of importance to both Mexican and Austrian philately
