Our September 12-13, 2023 Sale of Rare Stamps and Postal History of the World will take place at our Teaneck, N.J. Galleries and over the internet via CherrystoneLIVE. There are 1,500 lots in the sale, which begins with United States and U.S. Possessions. In the Worldwide section we are pleased to offer Great Britain and British Commonwealth, European Countries and the rest of the world, with exceptional China, including Postal History and additional lots from the Carl A. Kilgas collection. There are further selections from the estate of Dr.Martin Stempien, a specialized collection of Greece and Samos, formed by Dr.Frederick Rogers, and a selection of reference material from Sergio Sismondo's estate, with many fascinating offerings. The auction concludes with nearly 250 Large Lots and Collections, ranging from single country albums, specialized collections, multi-carton worldwide groups and large cover lots offered intact.

RUSSIA Russo-Japanese War Prisoner of War Mail
1904 Money letter for 5 Yen, sent by Russian prisoner (Chelepakhin) held at Matsuyama POW camp to a Japanese newspaper in Yokohama, violet handstamps and oval Japanese censor, also "Service des Prisonniers de Guerre" in violet, with Matsuyama cds and bilingual Yokohama markings on back, fine and exceptional internal usage by a Russian POW in Japan

RUSSIA Russo-Japanese War Prisoner of War Mail
1905 (8 Aug) registered Money Letter from Jacob Bapsan, Chaplynka (Ukraine) to "St. Petersburg Central Information Bureau of Prisoners of War", endorsed "Money, Ten Rubles", repeated in red crayon, with further endorsement "16 Aug" and "E.Kulin", franked on back with 1k, 3k and 20k Arms, with St. Petersburg arrival markings and five intact wax seals. Also "1-5 Sept 1905" handstamp and endorsed "Ispolneno" (done), probably an indication that a Money Order was prepared to be sent to Prisoner of War E.Kulin in a Japanese POW camp. An unusual money letter sent from Ukraine to St. Peterburg, from where it should have been converted into Austrian currency and sent by money order to the Japanese information office and from there to the prisoner at the POW camp
