Our August 22, 2023 United States auction features the Gerald Nylander Collection of Washington-Franklins, with an emphasis on Proofs, Essays, errors and varieties. Many of the items in this collection are unique and are the basis of some of the illustrations in Scott Specialized Catalogue. Gerald was a consummate stamp collector, contributor to the Scott Catalogue, author of many articles and frequent exhibitor (Essays, Trial Colors and Proofs 1908-1917; Postal Rates, Foreign Destinations and others). His collection also includes U.S. Banknotes and Currency. He was a member of the Collectors Club of Chicago and many other philatelic societies. 1776 Virginia (6 May), $1/3 (2s) note, very fine, PCGS 30PPQ, rare A great example of this much scarcer fractional denomination Virginia note. It has good print quality, ample margins and has retained the signature of Thomas Davis (legal tender Treasury Bills was issued, authorized on May 6, 1776 and redeemable by Jan. 1, 1784. The reverse of a Spanish milled Dollar was used as an insignia on one denomination of this and the next three State issues. Signers were Thomas Davis, John Dixon, John Carter Littlepage, Richard Morris, John H. Norton, Blovet Pasteur, and George Seaton)
