Our August 22, 2023 United States auction features the Gerald Nylander Collection of Washington-Franklins, with an emphasis on Proofs, Essays, errors and varieties. Many of the items in this collection are unique and are the basis of some of the illustrations in Scott Specialized Catalogue. Gerald was a consummate stamp collector, contributor to the Scott Catalogue, author of many articles and frequent exhibitor (Essays, Trial Colors and Proofs 1908-1917; Postal Rates, Foreign Destinations and others). His collection also includes U.S. Banknotes and Currency. He was a member of the Collectors Club of Chicago and many other philatelic societies. 1917 13c Franklin, Large Die Trial Color Proofs on india, twelve different, approximately 31x34mm, range of colors including salmon red, ultramarine, black, black brown, violet, olive green, orange yellow, red orange, dark green, claret brown, bright colors, v.f. A rare and desirable group of large die trial color proofs for the 13c Benjamin Franklin issue (the 13c denomination was originally proposed for the 1902 Issue, and was intended to pay the registry fee plus 5c international postage. On November 1, 1909 the registry fee was increased to 10c and there was no longer any need for the 13c stamp, until 1917, when the standard letter rate was increased to 3c and the registry fee was left at 10c)
