United States - Offices in China
1901 cover sent from Peking to Pittsburgh by First Lieutenant Manus MacCloskey with the 7th US Artillery of the China Relief Expedition. Postmarked "Mil Postal Sta No.1 China" in Peking, and "Mil Postal Sta No.1 China" cds in Tientsin, minor toning, with arrival pmk on back (MacCloskey, a West Point graduate, served with Light Battery F, 5th US Artillery in Cuba and the Philippines (where he was wounded). In July 1900 that unit and other American troops were sent to China as part of an international expedition to suppress the Boxer Rebellion. He commanded one of the battery's three platoons. The battery entered Peking on 14 August and bombarded the walls of the imperial city the next day, when MacCloskey was promoted to first lieutenant and assigned to the 7th US Artillery. He returned to the US in July 1901.He served with distinction in France during World War I, becoming a brigadier general in 1918). Illustrated in Forces Postal History Society Journal No. 324
