Welcome to our May 3-4 Sale which will take place live in our Galleries as well as via CherrystoneLIVE. This 1,306 lot sale features United States and Possessions, with 19th & 20th Century single rarities, graded items, proofs, essays and back of the book material. A-Z countries include specialized Austria, Egypt, France, as well as Germany with a selection of WWII Occupation Issues and mail from POW Camps. Great Britain and British Commonwealth include rare singles, high values, BNA and British Africa. There are numerous rarities from Iran, Italy (with Old States and Italian Colonies), Israel, with sheets of 7-9 and J1-5, Korea, Latvia and many other collecting areas. The auction concludes with a solid section of Large Lots and Collections ranging from single country albums to specialized collections, multi-carton worldwide groups and large cover lots offered intact.

 | Lot #553 WORLD WAR I - Prisoner of War Camp Mail Japan - German POWs 1916-18 selection of 30 covers or cards from and to Kurume camp, with incoming mail from Switzerland, one from United States, destinations include Tokyo, Shanghai, Chicago, various German cities, variety of cachets (letters B, C, G, Z), Easter greetings cards, Art Exhibition card "Austellung 1918 Kurume Japan", etc., occasional faults noted, mostly fine or better. A scarce group of covers, cards and wrappers to and from German POWs in Kurume (Japan participated in World War I as one of the Allied Powers, but its effective involvement was largely limited to the campaign against forces defending Germany's concession at Qingdao (Tsingtao) in China. The 1914 campaign ended with the Germans' surrender after a month and a half, at which point Japan found itself with 4,700 prisoners of war. They were dispersed to camps in 16 locations around Japan where they would be held for more than five years)
