We are pleased to present our February 1-2 sale featuring the collections formed by Clive Metcalfe, Dr.M.K. Blumenthal and other prominent collectors. This 1,307 lot auction begins with United States and Possessions, including 19th and 20th Century single rarities, graded items, proofs, essays and back of book material. The Foreign section includes a collection of Large Dragons of Shanghai, as well as strong sections of France and Colonies, Germany and British Commonwealth. On the second day of the sale we are pleased to offer an outstanding collection of Persia and Iran, with certified rarities. This will be followed by Japanese Postal History, featuring rare covers, many not seen for decades. The sale concludes with Large Lots and Collections, with hundreds of albums ranging from single country to specialized collections, multi-carton worldwide groups and excellent cover lots. 1874 (Dec) cover to the United States (Pay Director U.S. Navy, Portsmouth, N.H.), franked with 30s gray, tied by cds, with red Yokohama Jan 4 pmk alongside, San Francisco Jan 25 at left, endorsed "Chefoo China U.S.S. Kearsarge", some cover wear and backflap missing, otherwise fine example of single 30s franking on cover, signed Tyler (USS Kearsarge is best known for her defeat of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France during the American Civil War. Kearsarge was recommissioned in 1874 and departed for Yokohama, arriving there on 11 May. She cruised the Asiatic Station for three years, protecting American interests in China, Japan, and the Philippines. Kearsarge was named for Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire)

Endorsed "Per Gaelic", the cover most probably traveled on Occidental & Oriental Steamship Co. "Belgic" which left around the marked time period, printed address of "Morf & Co." on partially incomplete backflap, fine cover, with original letter of contents included, 2003 Eichhorn certificate: "a mixed franking of bird 12sen with old Koban 3sen has not been reported up to now" (JSCA 36,65,66)
