We are pleased to present our February 1-2 sale featuring the collections formed by Clive Metcalfe, Dr.M.K. Blumenthal and other prominent collectors. This 1,307 lot auction begins with United States and Possessions, including 19th and 20th Century single rarities, graded items, proofs, essays and back of book material. The Foreign section includes a collection of Large Dragons of Shanghai, as well as strong sections of France and Colonies, Germany and British Commonwealth. On the second day of the sale we are pleased to offer an outstanding collection of Persia and Iran, with certified rarities. This will be followed by Japanese Postal History, featuring rare covers, many not seen for decades. The sale concludes with Large Lots and Collections, with hundreds of albums ranging from single country to specialized collections, multi-carton worldwide groups and excellent cover lots. JAPAN - Covers and Postal History Mail to Switzerland
1897 (11 Aug) 3s stationery card sent from Tientsin, China to Switzerland, showing violet Tientsin I.J.P.O. cancel, with Yokohama transit. On arrival in Switzerland, the card was franked with 10c carmine and sent from Neuchatel, 1.X.97 back to Tientsin, from where it went through the French Post Office in Shanghai, receiving 2x5c "Chine" overprints franking, also two dollar chops of Tientsin and Shanghai on reverse, with additional transit of U.S.Postal Agency Shanghai (Nov 14, 97) and sent back to Switzerland, arriving Neuchatel 27.II.98, fine and remarkable traveling wonder
