We are pleased to present our February 1-2 sale featuring the collections formed by Clive Metcalfe, Dr.M.K. Blumenthal and other prominent collectors. This 1,307 lot auction begins with United States and Possessions, including 19th and 20th Century single rarities, graded items, proofs, essays and back of book material. The Foreign section includes a collection of Large Dragons of Shanghai, as well as strong sections of France and Colonies, Germany and British Commonwealth. On the second day of the sale we are pleased to offer an outstanding collection of Persia and Iran, with certified rarities. This will be followed by Japanese Postal History, featuring rare covers, many not seen for decades. The sale concludes with Large Lots and Collections, with hundreds of albums ranging from single country to specialized collections, multi-carton worldwide groups and excellent cover lots.  | Lot #604 BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIA Air Post 1919 First Aerial Post England-Australia, the so-called Ross-Smith vignette in dark blue, sheetlet with margins all around, n.h., diagonal marginal crease at upper left, otherwise v.f. and post office fresh, signed Diena. According to Eustis, 576 examples of the vignette were printed, of these 125 were destroyed and another 364 were used on mail; of the remaining 87 mint examples about 20 had their margins removed in anticipation of being used on mails and a further 25 (ca) are held in institutional collections around the world, leaving only 42 or so sheetlets available to private collectors ** | Price Realized $7,000.00 |
