 | Lot #1037 POLAND Polish Prisoners of War in the Soviet Union 1939 (7 Dec) Russian 20k stationery card, sent Jan 25, 1940 from NKVD POW (requesting war clothing and sending Holiday Greetings to his family) Camp Starobielsk to Przemysl, with Soviet occupied Feb 2, 1940 arrival postmark, fine (In 1939, during the Russian invasion of Poland, some 14,500 Polish officers were captured and interned in three P.O.W. camps in the Soviet Union. The next time the world heard of these prisoners was a news broadcast on April 13, 1943, from Radio Berlin. It stated that the German Army had discovered mass graves at Katyn, containing the bodies of Polish officers. Eight graves were opened and 4,253 bodies exhumed. All were dressed in Polish uniforms, with badges of rank and medals intact. No watches or rings were found on the corpses. It was established that the bodies were of Polish officers from the camp at Kozielsk, situated in the grounds of a former Monastery, near Orel. Two other camps, at Starobielsk (3,891 men) and at Ostashkov (6,311 men) were wound up and closed in the first days of April, 1940. Whatever happened to these 10,000 odd officers has never been established. They were never seen alive again.  | Lot #1038 POLAND Polish Prisoners of War in the Soviet Union 1939 (23 Oct) Russian 20k stationery card (two additional stamps removed), sent from Starobielsk Prisoner of War Camp by General Aleksander Kowalewski, return address "NKVD Camp Starobielsk" and sent to Warszawa, filing fold and archival punched holes at left, rare early POW card (General Kowalewski surrendered to the Soviet Army on 19th September, 1939 and after a short detention in Starobielsk, was transferred to Kharkov and murdered by the NKVD) | Price Realized $160.00 |

 | Lot #1041 POLAND Polish Prisoners of War in the Soviet Union 1940 (26 Jan) postcard from Warszawa to NKVD POW Camp Starobielsk, with Moscow 26.2.40 transit and 5.III. endorsement on back, stamp removed and filing fold, interestingly sent using a Polish postmark, without any German or Russian censor markings. The addressee, Capt. Edward Wrzesniewski was one of the few officers who survived the Katyn Massacre. He was later incarcerated in Pavlishchew Bor and Griazovetz | Price Realized $150.00 |
