Lot #316
COLOMBIA Air Post
1919 2c carmine rose, unused with full original gum, h.r., well centered with intact perforations, v.f. An unusually nice example of this air post rarity, signed Kessler, Sanabria and Roger Calves. Only 200 copies of this overprint were prepared for the experimental flight from Barranquilla to Puerto Colombia. Approximately 160 were used on covers. Overprinting was done in horizontal strips of 10, which were severed by knife, causing most of the stamps to be defective (catalogue value for a faulty copy)

In February 1920, the C.C.N.A. obtained a franchise to fly between Cartagena and Barranquilla and was authorized to issue its own stamps. This was facilitated by overprinting Compania Colombiana de Navegacion Aerea Porte Aereo and surcharging $0.10 on the Curtiss Aereo Plane & Motor Co. advertising labels. Less than 100 of each of the nine types were produced. These stamps were used on two first flights on February 22, 1920 from Cartagena and returning March 4 from Barranquilla. In July 1920, the air mail concession was passed to SCADTA. The C.C.N.A. ceased to operate in April, 1922)
