1846 (21 June) "Duiten" "Land Mail" Postage Due Label applied on complete FL from Gravenhage to Batavia, Java (Netherlands Indies) with manuscript "2-16" and "13 Aug 1846" added, ample margins all around, blue Gravenhage originating circular datestamp, endorsed "per overland via Marseilles", couple of usual insignificant faint toned spots, some hinge remnants and old price indicated on back, v.f. and extremely rare cover, signed Friedl. Proper usage of what is considered one of the world's earliest postage due stamps (paying letter rate for unpaid letters received at Batavia from abroad) (NVPH, €3,500)
