Welcome to our September 15-16, 2020 Auction which will be held simultaneously via CherrystoneLIVE and Stamp Auction Network (SAN). This sale contains 1,353 lots of Rare Stamps and Postal History of the World, with United States and European countries, including Austria, France and Colonies, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, and others. Great Britain and British Commonwealth are well represented, covering all Reigns with many high values and sets from Aden to Zanzibar. Also featured is a collection of Imperial China, with Dowagers and extensive Red Revenues which include small 4c and inverted 2c and $5 overprints. This section is followed by solid selection from Republic of China (Taiwan) and PRC souvenir sheets. From Egypt (Kingdom), there is a fine showing of used and unused sets and postal history.  | Lot #373 CHINA 1897 Red Revenues, surcharged small "4 cents" on 3c red, unused large part original gum, with some adhesions and faint toning, irregular perforations at top, well centered and fine appearing example of this rare stamp. On February 20, 1897, a new national postal service was inaugurated in China. Prior to this, an order was made with a printer in Japan, but he was unable to supply the stamps in time for the inauguration. Prior to this in 1896, 650,000 Red Revenues had been ordered for a new proposed taxation. Quickly abandoned due to public outcry, these stamps were pressed into service with new overprints for postal use. The Small Format 4c, similar to the other values, were printed in panes of 25. Only two sheets of 100 (200 total) were printed containing four panes each. One of those panes was deemed too light and received an additional violet overprint (Scott 81a; Chan 85a).
