CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA Regular Issues
1862 large part of "Confederate States of America War Department. Offices of Indian Affairs" cover, addressed to "Col Stand Watie, Principal Chief Cherokee Nation, Care of Lieut Gen E Kirby Smith", considerable toning and paper erosion, interesting item (Stand Watie was a leader of the Cherokee Nation. They allied with the Confederacy, and he was the only Native American to attain a general's rank in the Civil War, Confederacy or Union. He commanded the Confederate Indian cavalry of the Army of the Trans-Mississippi, made up mostly of Cherokee, Muskogee and Seminole. He was the last Confederate general in the field to cease hostilities at wars end). Ex-Brandon collection (hammer $1,700 in 2014).
