We are pleased to present our April 22, 2020 sale of United States Stamps and Postal History, featuring the collection of Richard Carl. With 740 lots, we have nice sections of Stampless Covers, Free Franks and Autographed letters, Postmasters' Provisionals, an excellent range of imperf. Classics and other 19th Century used and unused, including Fancy Cancels, Civil War Patriotics, Territorial covers, 20th Century with Regular Issues and Commemoratives to $5, Large Die Proofs, Modern Errors and varieties. Back of the book includes Air Post, Postage Dues and more, followed by Confederate States, U.S. Possessions and Large Lots and Collections. Robert, Prisoner of War, "Johnsons Island, Near Sandusky, Ohio", sent from Grognasville NC, with Old Point Comfort, VA transit, franked with two 5c Confederate adhesive and defective 3c USA stamp, further endorsed "Via Flag of Truce City Point", scarce South to North POW cover (U.S. rules called for the removal of the "Rebels" when mail entered the U.S. postal system), overall ageing and cover creases, with extensive Molesworth write-up in pencil, CSA certificate (Johnson's Island was a Union prison for Confederate officers during the American Civil War.  | Lot #687 CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA Prisoner of War & Flag of Truce covers 1864 cover addressed to "Mr. James C Wall, Prisoner of War Camp Morton Indianapolis, Indiana", franked with uncanceled U.S. 3c rose, further endorsed "By flag of Truce via City Point", penciled "U.S. Currency" and on back "Postage enclosed in silver", fine, with elaborate Molesworth's write-up. Envelopes containing cash for Rebel POWs were separated from the regular mail at Fortress Monroe and carried to the prisons by military couriers. Since this routing bypassed the Federal mails, stamps on such covers were not canceled. Mr. Wall enlisted in 1863 at Princeton, WV and was taken prisoner in 1864 at Piedmont, Va, confined to Camp Morton and exchanged on March 3, 1865 | Price Realized $850.00 |
