PALESTINE Air Mail History of the Holyland Flight Covers
1927 Imperial Airways Special Flight (Gaza-Baghdad-Basra), cover with corner cachet of the American Express Company Jaffa Road Jerusalem, franked with 2x13m (one corner fault), tied by 5 April Jerusalem machine cancels, addressed to Karachi, with Baghdad (7 Apr), Karachi (15 Apr) and "Drigh Road" cds on back (facsimile labels hinged at bottom of cover), filing folds away from the stamps, fine. On 6th January 1927, Imperial Airways took over from the Royal Air Force and this special flight by "G-EBNA" aircraft (piloted by Capt. Travers) from Gaza via Baghdad carried civilian mail, preceding the actual opening of the route to the public by two years. A rarity, one of only five covers carried on this flight
