Lot #69
Fred Blau ISRAEL Flight Covers
1948 (21 Dec) CSA Flight 584 (a Douglas C-47A, registration OK-WDN), cover originating from Timisoara, with Romanian franking on back, sent via Prague, with label ("the present letter has been found in the plane crash (air route OK 584 Prague-Lydda crashed 21.XII.1948 near Calamata, Greece/Post Office Prague 120"). For many years it was presumed that this airplane was shot down near Pilos, Greece after the pilot transmitted a flare, which was taken as a threat from military forces engaged in an exercise on the ground and the aircraft was fired upon from the ground and crashed, killing all 24 on board. More recently, from the freedom of information act, we learned that the pilot was forced to change the route due to bad weather. His distress calls were not answered and he crashed into a hill. A fine and rare item
