The Hawkins Collection of Select European Countries
December 4, 2019

The Hawkins collection is a fine assembly of unused stamps from several pre-World War II European Countries, notably Albania, Austria, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. There are many rare and seldom offered classics, such as an unused 1851 2 Reales Isabella and 3 Cuartos Arms of Madrid from Spain, Zurich and Geneva 4Rp and 6Rp, as well as a Basel Dove and a complete selection of Sitting and Standing Helvetias. Most of the individual lots are accompanied by certificates, with excellent and comprehensive balances offered intact, with Greece, Germany, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and others. A compact and powerful single owner sale, the Hawkins Collection will be sold on 4th December 2019 at 1:00 PM at our New York Galleries and via CherrystoneLive.

SWITZERLAND
1854 Sitting Helvetia, thin paper, fine impression (Munich issue), emerald silk threads, 5 Rp orange brown, unused with original gum, h.r., margins all around except just touching frame line at top, nice color, fine and appealing example of this rare Strubel Issue, signed A.Brun, with 2001 Berra-Gautschy certificate (Zu.22Aa, SFr 8,300) (these stamps feature a seated figure of Helvetia wearing a laurel wreath. She holds a spear in her right arm, and her left arm is resting on a shield, emblazoned with the arms of the Helvetic Confederation. The effect given by the shape of the wreath around her embossed head caused many German speaking collectors to jokingly refer to the design as "Strubel", referring to the visual effect of Helvetia having "unkempt" or "frizzy" hair. The nickname for these issues stuck, and just about every collector of Swiss stamps now refers to them as "The Strubels")
