Welcome to our September 17-18 Sale, to be held at our New York City galleries. There are 1,522 lots of rare stamps and postal history of the World, featuring properties of numerous vendors and estates sold by their order. A selection of United States, including the Unique Double Franking Brattleboro Provisional, followed by Austria, Belgium, specialized Carpatho-Ukraine and Baltic Countries, Asia, France and Colonies, Germany and Colonies, Italian Area, specialized Liechtenstein, Spain, South America and Scandinavian countries. There are strong sections of Poland, with numerous ex-Mikulski items, as well as Russia, with rare proofs and essays. Great Britain and British Commonwealth are well represented and there are numerous flight covers of the world, with selections of Zeppelin dispatches. The sale concludes with the usual selection of large lots, which range from single country collections to multi-carton worldwide groups of stamps and covers.

1917-23 Inflation in Soviet Russia, the award-winning collection formed by Helmuth Hiessbock, seven 12-page frames, written up on 10 1/2 x 11 1/2 Lindner pages, 129 covers, cards, parcel cards, Money Orders and other forms, beginning with a registered cover used 25.10.17 from Petrograd to Tolstye (Tula), correctly franked with 35k, tied by cds, with 27th October arrival, a significant historical item used on the day of the Great October Revolution (on 7 November 1917, Vladimir Lenin led his revolutionaries in a revolt against the ineffective Provisional Government. Russia was still using the Julian Calendar at the time, so period references show a 25 October date. The October revolution ended the phase of the revolution instigated in February, replacing Russia's short-lived provisional parliamentary government with government by Soviets, local councils elected by bodies of workers and peasants), Romanov card and cover with additional franking, Postal Savings stamps and Imperial issues, various rapidly changing postal rates reflecting the political situation, Chainbreakers 35k and 70k, including pane of 70x70k, with additional franking on Postal Money Order, another with 39x35k, with additional stamps on Parcel card, Provisional Local usages on cards, one from "Samytye" to Wyritza, another from "Wosnesenst" to a soldier in the 27th regiment (each with Mikulski certificate), others with local "Ryb" handstamps from Kharkov, registered Money Order from Verny to Khudaber (18x20r overprints), 1922 cover from Rostov-on-Don, with 2t (2000r) green (B30), Inverted overprints on money order, large Tete-beche multiple on parcel card, local covers from Melitopol, Smolensk and Kiev, numerous flight covers and cards, including properly franked usage with first Air Mail overprint (C1), Semi-Postals, with locally used First Day cover franked with silver surcharge (B42 etc., with Mikulski certificate), other flights and fantastic inflation frankings, manuscript postal markings implicating "cash payments" (including one from "Kalys" to Berlin, with "10R" endorsements, stamps not available), 1921 cover from Simferopol to Berlin, franked with 4x50k Postal Savings stamp (largest known franking) many accompanied by certificates (Dr.Ceresa, Mandrovsky, etc.), expertly written-up, with focus on the seven different tariff changes, mixed frankings, domestic and foreign destinations, some Postage Dues, fractional usages, mainly in fine collectable quality, difficult to duplicate, many ex-Liphshutz, Faberge and other prominent philatelists.
