Welcome to our Summer auction to be held on August 6-7 2019 at our New York City galleries and on CherrystoneLive. There are 1,668 lots of rare Stamps and Postal History of the World, with properties of numerous vendors and estates sold by their order. We begin with United States, followed by Austria, Belgium, France and Colonies, Germany and Colonies, Italy, Liechtenstein, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Scandinavian Countries. British Commonwealth is well represented with strength in Victoria and George V singles and sets. Also noteworthy is Colombia with a complete set of the 1920 Scadta vignettes unused and on individual covers. There is also a selection of Ethiopia, additional South and Central America, Asia and rest of the world. This auction concludes with 100+ large lots and collections, which range from single country collections to multi-carton worldwide groups of stamps and covers

1918 (12 Oct) handwritten two-page letter (in Hebrew) from David Ben Gurion to Nina Berlin (first Jewish woman volunteer accepted into the British Army as a nurse) on stationery of the Jewish Legion, with attractive Coat of Arms letterhead, signed "David", also unused picture postcard of Ben Gurion in uniform with Star of David patch of the Jewish Legion (after the Balfour Declaration of November 1917, Ben-Gurion, with the interest of Zionism in mind, joined the newly formed Jewish Legion of the British Army and volunteered for the 38th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, one of the four which constituted the Jewish Legion. 1920 (13 Mar) handwritten four-page letter (in Russian) from Zeev Jabotinsky to girlfriend Nina Berligne (later Nina Berlin) in Geneva, with envelope franked with British Mandate 1pi adhesive, sent from Jerusalem, fine letter (Zeev Jabotinsky (1980-1940) was a Zionist leader, author, poet, orator, soldier and founder of the Jewish Self-Defense Organization in Odessa. With Joseph Trumpeldor, he co-founded the Jewish Legion of the British army in World War I. Later he established several Jewish organizations in Palestine, including Beitar, Hatzohar and the Irgun)

1941 Letter on "Jewish Agency for Palestine" stationery, signed by Dr. Arthur Ruppin (a Zionist thinker and leader. He was one of the founders of the city of Tel Aviv, and directed Berlin's Bureau for Jewish Statistics and Demography from 1902 to 1907. Ruppin joined the Zionist Organization in 1905 and in 1907 he was sent by David Wolffsohn, the President of the ZO, to study the condition of the Yishuv (the Jewish community in Palestine), then in the Ottoman Empire, to investigate the possibilities for development of agriculture and industry. He reported on what he saw, which was distressing, and gave recommendations for improving the situation. In 1908 Ruppin came to live in Palestine by decision of the eighth Zionist Congress. He opened the Palestine Office of the Zionist Organization in Jaffa, with the aim of directing the settlement activities of the Zionist movement. His work made Practical Zionism possible and shaped the direction of the Second Aliya, the last wave of Jewish immigration)

1948 (9 June) vellum with memorial for a soldier who fell in War of Independence, signed by David Ben Gurion, fine (David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973) was the primary national founder of the State of Israel and the first Prime Minister of Israel. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935, and later president of the Jewish Agency Executive, he was the de facto leader and largely led the struggle for an independent Jewish state. On 14 May 1948, he formally proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel, and was the first to sign the Israeli Declaration of Independence. Ben-Gurion led Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and united the various Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He is known as Israel's founding father)
