HAITI
1800 TOUSSAINT L'OUVERTURE, Pierre Dominique (1746-1803) Haitian black revolutionary leader. Born of African slave parents in Haiti, he was freed in 1777. In 1791 he joined black insurgents and in 1797 was made commander-in-chief. He began to aim for independence in 1800, but was eventually taken prisoner and died in France. A document headed "Republique Francaise, Toussaint Louverture General en chef de l'armee de Saint-Domingue", signed by him at Cap, as "Le General en chef", with additional signatures of various officials at bottom and on reverse, also with red wax seal, some overall toning and paper reinforcements, rare document signed by Toussaint L'Ouverture
