1818 Da Ponte, Lorenzo (1749-1838), an Italian, later American opera librettist, poet and Roman Catholic priest. He wrote the libretti for 28 operas by 11 composers, including three of Mozart's most celebrated operas, Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and Cosi Fan Tutte. In 1828, at the age of 79, Lorenzo Da Ponte became a naturalized U.S. citizen. In 1833, at the age of 84, he founded the New York Opera Company. A four-page quarto, letter written in Italian, dated 4 November, 1818, Philadelphia, with departure pmk, charged 12 1/2, sent to Mr. N. Moore in New York, little toning, otherwise fine letter from Mozart's librettist and founder of the New York Opera

GILBERT, William and SULLIVAN, Arthur. (The Victorian-era theatrical partnership of the dramatist W. S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and the composer Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900). The two men collaborated on 14 comic operas between 1871 and 1896, of which H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado are among the best known).
