Lot #540
GUATEMALA
1886 The Rail Bond Provisional Issue, 25c on 1p vermilion, single canceled by violet grids and properly used on registered cover from Guatemala City to Canada, with blue "Oficiana de Certificados/Guatemala/Apr 27 1886" oval below, boxed registry handstamp (numbers filled in by hand), also an apparently private purple "Por via Livingston" routing hs, with Boston transit and St. Johns and Halifax arrival pmks on back. Goodman lays out the case that this issue was more for philatelic purposes using the large remainder of Rail Bond stamps and that there was little postal demand for high denomination stamps, thus when they went on sale there was little demand and they were only in use for slightly less than four months and then withdrawn; the cover offered here is properly used in every way, paying the 10c UPU postal rate and the 15c registry fee, some toning, otherwise fine, one of only six covers reported
