BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIA
1843 (17 Apr) FL headed "Australind" & signed "Wpearce Clifton", to Yorkshire "p Phantom to Mauritius" (endorsed within), light strike of rectangular "SHIP LETTER" and crown/Western Australia Paid" handstamp of Bunbury (only example recorded in black), date filled in by hand, on reverse boxed CALCUTTA/GPO/SHIP LETTER in red, also 6 NO 43/LIVERPOOL/SHIP, some typical age-related soiling and stains. The earlier of only two recorded covers bearing the Ship Letter handstamp (the other being from five years later & in red), carried per "Phantom" which departed from Port Leschenault (later Bunbury) on 20/4/1843 directly for Mauritius, ex Dr Cecil Walkley (the sender, William Pearce Clifton arrived in 1841 on the "Parkfield". In 1846 he was appointed magistrate & in 1847, helped survey the road from Bunbury to Williams)
