Lot #2165
United States 1914-17 Issues
1917 2c rose, A.E.F. booklet pane of 30, lightly hinged, well-centered, deep rich color, v.f. example of this rare booklet pane. It is believed that no more than 20 panes exist, the vast majority of which are poorly centered. This incredibly well centered example is considered among the finest. The A.E.F. booklet panes were issued in September 1917, primarily for use by the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. Only 3,000 panes were prepared of both the 1c and 2c denominations. By October they were no longer needed for the postcard rate, as Congress passed a vote allowing first-class mail to be sent free of charge by active members of the Armed Forces. Many of the panes were destroyed. A rare opportunity to obtain a beautiful 2c A.E.F. booklet pane, ex-Vineyard collection (realized $24,000 plus buyers commission in 2004), with 1995 PFC,
