 | Lot #1231 BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIA Incoming Mail 1855 (1 June) cover (with contents) from England "To be left at the Post Office/till called for Melbourne/Port Phillip", franked with 3x2d blue, tied by diamond numeral 16 cancels & straight line Battersea backstamp in blue, '1d' in red for the payment due to Victoria, also SHIP LETTER/FREE/AU27/1853/GPO VICTORIA' arrival in red & rated "2" as a town letter, ADVERTISED/AND/UNCLAIMED handstamp, endorsed on the reverse "Opend by a person of same name 18.10", carried per clipper "Donald Mackay", departed Liverpool 5/6/1855, arrived Melbourne 26/8/1855 (the addressee's surname "Duon" is most unusual. It seems highly improbable that there was "a person of the same name" in Melbourne at the time.
