Lot #1231
BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIA Incoming Mail
1855 (1 June) cover (with contents) from England "To be left at the Post Office/till called for Melbourne/Port Phillip", franked with 3x2d blue, tied by diamond numeral 16 cancels & straight line Battersea backstamp in blue, '1d' in red for the payment due to Victoria, also SHIP LETTER/FREE/AU27/1853/GPO VICTORIA' arrival in red & rated "2" as a town letter, ADVERTISED/AND/UNCLAIMED handstamp, endorsed on the reverse "Opend by a person of same name 18.10", carried per clipper "Donald Mackay", departed Liverpool 5/6/1855, arrived Melbourne 26/8/1855 (the addressee's surname "Duon" is most unusual. It seems highly improbable that there was "a person of the same name" in Melbourne at the time. The intended recipient probably opened and read the letter, stated it was not for him and thus avoided paying the 2d postage due)
