 | Lot #1196 BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AUSTRALIAN STATES - Victoria 1856 (30 Jan) double rated FL to Scotland "Per Hellespont/via Singapore", franked with Woodblock 6d (2), ample margins, one just in at left, both tied by "1" (Melbourne), with London transit on back, also MORE TO PAY hs & ms "8" applied on front, Edinburgh arrival in red (carried per "Hellespont", departed 18 2 1856, via the Indian Ocean & arrived Singapore 16 March; then per P & O "Norna" to Galle; "Bombay" to Suez; & with "Pera", arriving Southampton 4 May 1856. During the Crimean War many P & O ships were pressed into Naval service & mail services became infrequent and more reliant on private shipping. The "Hellespont" was a coastal steamer that was sent to Singapore to be sold. This is a famous voyage, from which little surviving mail is recorded)  | Unsold |
