 | Lot #2160 United States 1914-17 Issues 1916 2c deep rose, Type Ia, Imperforate, Schermack Type III Private Perforation, deep rich color on bright white paper, centered to left as are virtually all recorded examples, Schermack perforations completely intact at left showing small part of adjoining stamp at left, cancel leaves most of design clearly visible, v.f., with 1986 and 2002 PFCs. One of only 40 recorded examples of this major 20th Century United States rarity, especially rare with such enormous margins around design (Scott's No. 482A, like its more famous predecessor, Scott's 314A, was issued imperforate by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and sold to the Schermack Company for use in its patented stamp-affixing machines. The Schermack Sealer and Stamper machine typically applied stamps one at a time, and, in most cases, the hyphen-hole perfs on one side would be cut off.  | Lot #2165 United States 1914-17 Issues 1917 2c rose, A.E.F. booklet pane of 30, lightly hinged, well-centered, deep rich color, v.f. example of this rare booklet pane. It is believed that no more than 20 panes exist, the vast majority of which are poorly centered. This incredibly well centered example is considered among the finest. The A.E.F. booklet panes were issued in September 1917, primarily for use by the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe during World War I. Only 3,000 panes were prepared of both the 1c and 2c denominations. By October they were no longer needed for the postcard rate, as Congress passed a vote allowing first-class mail to be sent free of charge by active members of the Armed Forces. Many of the panes were destroyed. A rare opportunity to obtain a beautiful 2c A.E.F. booklet pane, ex-Vineyard collection (realized $24,000 plus buyers commission in 2004), with 1995 PFC,
