1828 FL with full contents, sent from Great Britain to Newcastle, Carmarthenshire, South Wales, rated "1/8" with "Ship Letter Plymouth" handstamp on reverse, some slight stains, still fine, the letter speaks of "our leaving Port Macquarie within 30 miles of Parramatta" and of assisting a minister of religion to leave the UK for New South Wales as a missionary where "he could get board and lodging" and "we want godly men in the country", etc.

1841 (Jul 13) O.H.M.S. usage of "Mrs. Muir" illustrated lettersheet ("St Jean d'Acre/After the Battle"), with lengthy letter addressed to John Septimus Roe (Surveyor General) in Swan River, Western Australia, ms "6" in red (private ship letter rate), with curved "Paid Malta" and oval crown "General Post office Oct. 23 1841 Cape of Good Hope" handstamps, endorsed "Via Bombay" (though the Cape handstamp suggests the cover went through the Straits of Gibraltar and then around the Cape), letter professionally restored, otherwise fine, a rare usage to an unusual destination, Roe was a key player in the development of Western Australia and has been called the "Father of Australian Exploration",

Interestingly the cover is addressed to "Austrian Felix" (Happy Southern Land) which was a name given by the explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell to the western section of Port Phillip in Victoria. In 1873, Horatio Alger published his novel "Try and Trust". Is there a connection?)

It seems highly improbable that there was "a person of the same name" in Melbourne at the time. The intended recipient probably opened and read the letter, stated it was not for him and thus avoided paying the 2d postage due)
